Rotting Disease

The rot is a disease is afflicting residents in and near Port Maraisa with boils and lesions that look like bark when they scar over.

Mother Verduna, priestess of Ilmater, runs The Lazaretto for citizens who have been infected. She claims that the disease is [[Session 01#^rotting-disease|not contagious]], though there is evidence that perhaps it might be.

The disease may also be impacting humans either primarily or exclusively. Began Quest: Dermal Dilemma.

  • First symptom is a fever for one to two weeks that is frequently fatal. Some people survive the fever without taking the rot, but most either die or the disease progresses.
  • The rot begins in the extremities. Amputation will slow progress, but not stop it.
  • After the skin is harded, the disease calcifies the throat and prevents breathing and/or swallowing.
  • The diseased corpses don’t rot well. They are more like bone or old leather than flesh.
  • The rotting disease does not appear in the Order of Hospitalers Journals. Mother Verduna told us that the rot has been around since she took over the Lazaretto.
